We propose a novel cross layer link quality management scheme, termed “RSSI-based Cross Layer Link Quality Management (RCLLQM)” for Layer 3 wireless mesh networks (WMNs), assuming each node has one or more wireless devices that support multiple transmission rates such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n. In this method RSSI measurement is performed for received hello packets at the basic rate generated by the routing protocol at each node. Packet Error Rate (PER) and link metric at each rate at each link are estimated to select the optimum rate, such that the link metric becomes a minimum. This rate and the corresponding link metric are used to calculate the best path for each destination in the routing protocol for an appropriate interval (typically in the order of hours). We show that the RSSI-based PER estimation method is promising using an actual testbed. |
