In this paper, we propose a routing scheme for a layer 3 wireless mesh network, which is composed of a mesh backbone, a collection of mesh nodes (MNs), and mobile stations. An MN provides an access point capability of conventional wireless LAN and accommodates legacy mobile stations. We propose a novel scalable and handover-supported routing scheme assuming no modification in legacy mobile station functions. The proposed routing scheme is composed of a proactive routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks running on the backbone and additional routing capabilities for mobile stations to send and receive packets, which is termed station routing in this paper. To realize station routing meeting the requirement mentioned above, we focus on an IP address assignment for mobile stations, IP address monitoring, resolution and advertisement by MNs, and packet rerouting. We have evaluated the performance of proposed scheme under various parameters. The results show that the proposed scheme reduces overhead significantly compared with an existing scheme. |
